Pitch Pine Stand

Pitch pines are very rare in Lewisboro, occurring in only one location at the old fire tower in the Ward Pound Ridge Reservation. Like the chestnut oak, pitch pines can grown on very thin, rocky soil and are fire-resistant, allowing them to out-compete other plants on high, rocky hilltops.

Since they grow on very windy, harsh hilltops they often tend to be gnarled and stunted. Other plants growing among the pitch pines are low bush blueberry, sweet fern, bracken fern, Pennsylvania sedge and little blue stem grass and occasionally, prickly pear cactus.
